Mardi Gras : Throw Me Somethin’ Mister!!

by Jannika Forester

Mardi Gras, Carnival, Fat Tuesday, no matter how you cut the King’s Cake, this beloved
celebration is the a fine tradition of stuffing face just before the penitential season of lent. If you are unfamiliar with Mardi Gras, some popular practices include wearing masks and costumes, overturning social conventions, dancing, sports competitions, parades, etc. Similar expressions to Mardi Gras appear in other countries sharing the Christian religion. For some of the youngins in the crowd, Mardi Gras is probably more relatable in the context of the boobs for beads barter system, a culture nurtured by the rash of commercial videotapes catering to voyeurs, *cough-GIRLSGONEWILD-cough,* started
in the last decade of the 20th century. Rest assured, gentle reader, these nefarious goings on are practiced only in very small fragments of where Mardi Gras is celebrated, mostly by
visitors rather than locals. But hey, laissez les bons temps rouler, we’re New Yorker’s; we know how tourists can be.

Other cities famous for Mardi Gras celebrations include Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Barranquilla, Colombia, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Quebec City, Canada; Mazatlán, Sinaloa in Mexico; and of course, New Orleans, Louisiana. But don’t think you need to become a jet-setting party animal to get in on the action, there are usually a few things happening right outside your front door. Check back later for more information on the laissez-faire goings on in the New York City area.
