 Cinco de Mayo Party Tips

 By Jonathan Glatt

This Saturday, May 5th is Cinco de Mayo, just one event of many you've been training your liver for. Each year, this somewhat obscure holiday draws steadily larger bar crowds. The decorations become more colorful and the margaritas get tastier. Oddly enough, the tequila shots never get easier to swallow.

Here are some cool, creative ways to bring old world Mexican charm to your fiesta. Our party planning tips and tricks just might surprise you!

    • Everyone loves a piñata! They make fantastic party decorations, center pieces, or one heck of a group activity. If you're a traditionalist, stuff that piñata with candy, novelty toys (bouncy balls and noise makers are fun), knick knacks and small treasures. Alternatively, if tus amigos are hitting the tequila, consider trading in the tootsie rolls for packets of Alka Seltzer or aspirin.

    • Use the brim of a couple sombreros as chip bowls. Use smaller, child sized sombreros to space out the snacking and eliminate crowding. Strategicallyplace a few small bowls of different salsas inside the brim around the chips to complete the look.

    • Small clear bowls filled will spices, seasonings, and limes make for a great bar accent. They also come in handy for those Coronas, Micheladas, and tequila shots!

    • Fiesta mustaches and maracas make hilarious table settings or party favors for each guest

Here are our favorite party supplies for your buffet, table and bar:

    • Fiesta Paper Goods

    • Sombrero Hats

    • Glitter Maracas

    • Fiesta Beads

    • LED Maracas

    • 3' Inflatable Cactus

For an authentic Cinco de Mayo fiesta, try a Mexican buffet so that everyone can sample a little bit of everything. Be sure to cover any easily stainable furniture and items of the like with some serapes for a splash of color and culture, but mostly just to protect your new white couch. Some foods that you might want to consider are chicken fajitas, soft tortillas, chili con queso, tortilla soup, Mexican rice, black bean and corn salsa, three-milk cake, and flan. Alternatively, if you’re expecting the whole barrio, try a Mexican taco bar!

After filling your belly with tacos, what better to cleanse the palate than alcohol? There are many types of Mexican beer like Modelo, Corona, Tecate, and Dos Equis to start. There are also a slew of traditional mixed drinks. But why should you make them choose? Stock the cooler with beers and whip up some of our muy delicioso mixed drinks and cocktails at your Cinco de Mayo celebration.
