Sweet Sixteen - A sweet sixteen party is a type of birthday party popular in the United States and Canada. Turning sixteen means reaching the threshold of adulthood. No
longer a child but not yet a grownup, sixteen is an exciting time. A sweet sixteen party can be extremely formal, casual, or semi-formal and it can range from a simple house party or dinner party at a restaurant to large affairs with a hired DJ, makeup and hair stylists,
and renting out hotel ballrooms. The term “sweet sixteen” has been used since at least 1597, and sweet sixteen birthday parties have been held at least since 1765. Traditional sweet sixteen parties include a shoe ceremony, tiara ceremony and father-daughter dance. In the shoe ceremony the birthday girl wears flat shoes and sits down in a chair while her father (or another family representative) presents her with high heels on a decorative pillow. The father ceremoniously helps her into her new high heels to symbolize her becoming a woman. The tiara ceremony is similar, except the girl is presented with a tiara instead of shoes and wears party sunglasses.
